Detailed Itinerary.
Day 1: Kigali to Akagera National Park.
Your adventure begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel or Kigali International Airport by your private driver-guide in a luxury 4×4 safari vehicle. As you depart Kigali, enjoy a picturesque two-and-a-half-hour drive through Rwanda’s lush hills and rural villages, heading east toward Akagera National Park.
Upon arrival at the park’s southern gate, you’ll check-in and enjoy a light refreshment as your guide briefs you on the park’s rich ecosystem. Akagera is a beautifully diverse landscape of savannahs, wetlands, and woodlands and is home to the Big Five lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and rhinos along with giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, and over 500 species of birds.
You’ll embark on your first game drive, winding through the southern sector, where wildlife sightings are abundant. The park’s conservation success has led to a thriving population of wildlife, and the chances of spotting predators and grazers are high. Stop for a scenic picnic lunch under the shade of an acacia tree or at a designated viewpoint with expansive views of Lake Ihema.
By late afternoon, arrive at your luxury lodge where you can unwind and freshen up. Before dinner, enjoy a sundowner by the infinity pool or from your private deck as the sun melts into the horizon and the sounds of the wild come alive. Enjoy a gourmet dinner under the stars, followed by storytelling by the campfire or a nightcap at the bar, soaking in the atmosphere of the African wilderness.
Accommodation: Magashi Camp, Ruzizi Tented Lodge, Akagera Game Lodge.
Meals: (Dinner).
Day 2: Morning Game Drive & Boat Cruise – Return to Kigali
Wake up early to the sound of birdsong and distant calls of wildlife. After a fresh, hearty breakfast, set out for a sunrise game drive into the northern sector of the park, which is particularly rich in wildlife. This time of day is ideal for spotting predators in action and catching iconic animals like elephants, antelope, and hyenas in the golden morning light.
The northern plains are vast and open, allowing for panoramic views and increased chances of encountering large herds of grazers and a pride of lions on the move. Your expert guide will interpret animal behavior and share insights into Akagera’s conservation story and natural history.
By late morning, you’ll head south for a boat cruise on Lake Ihema. Glide across the calm waters as you observe hippos wallowing, crocodiles sunning themselves, and a dazzling array of birdlife, including African fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, and the elusive shoebill stork if you’re lucky. The boat safari offers a peaceful yet adventurous contrast to the game drives.
Return to your lodge for lunch and a brief relaxation before checking out. Afterward, you’ll begin the scenic return journey to Kigali, with optional stops for local crafts shopping or a visit to the Nyamata Genocide Memorial if desired.
Arrive back in Kigali by early evening, where you’ll be dropped off at your hotel or the airport, marking the end of your enriching two-day luxury safari in Rwanda.
